Beyond the Book: How to Build a Six-Figure Community Around Your Expertise

For many authors, publishing a book feels like the end goal. You spend months, sometimes years, getting your ideas onto paper, refining your message, and finally hitting publish. It’s a huge achievement and it should be celebrated. But what most authors don’t realise is that publishing a book isn’t the finish line. It’s the beginning.

A book on its own rarely builds a business. It can generate some income, create a sense of accomplishment, and open a few doors. But the real opportunity lies in what you choose to build around it. When you start to see your book as a foundation rather than a final product, everything changes.

From Author to Opportunity Builder

A book does something incredibly powerful, it gives you credibility. It tells the world that you have knowledge, experience, or insight worth sharing. That alone positions you differently from someone who is just talking about an idea.

But credibility without direction doesn’t go very far.

The shift that needs to happen is simple. Instead of asking, “How do I sell more books?”, you start asking, “How can I help my readers go further?” That one question opens up a completely different set of opportunities.

Your readers are not just buyers. They are potential students, community members, clients, and long-term followers. Once you understand that, your book becomes the entry point to something much bigger.

My Journey Beyond the Book

When I published my first book in 2019, I didn’t have a clear plan beyond getting it out into the world. Like many authors, I thought the hard work was done once it was published. It didn’t take long to realise that readers wanted more than just the book. They had questions. They wanted guidance. They were looking for the next step.

Job Launch - Romney Nelson

That’s what led me to start a YouTube channel in 2020, where I could share more insights and answer common questions. In 2021, I created my first online course to provide a more structured, step-by-step approach. As I continued to build, I developed affiliate partnerships with tools I was already using, such as KDSPY and Publisher Rocket. By 2023, I began offering private coaching to work more closely with people who wanted personalised support.

Fast forward to today, and that single book has grown into something far more substantial. I’ve had over 50,000 students enrol in my courses across platforms like Udemy, Skillshare, and Thinkific. My YouTube channel has grown to more than 30,000 subscribers, and I’ve built an email list of over 5,000 people. Alongside this, affiliate partnerships now provide a consistent monthly income stream.

None of this came from the book alone. It came from recognising that the book was just the starting point.

Building a Community That Lasts

One of the most valuable assets you can build as an author is a community. A book allows you to reach people once, but a community allows you to stay connected with them over time.

Platforms like Skool make it easier than ever to bring your audience together in one place. Instead of your readers finishing your book and moving on, you can invite them into a space where they can continue learning, ask questions, and connect with others on a similar journey.

A community shifts your model from one-off transactions to ongoing relationships. It also creates the opportunity for recurring income, which brings far more stability than relying purely on book sales.

Turning Your Knowledge Into a Course

Your book already contains structured ideas, which makes it the perfect foundation for an online course. While a book explains concepts, a course allows you to guide people through the process step by step.

Using a platform like Thinkific, you can expand on your content through video lessons, templates, and practical exercises. This not only increases the value you provide but also allows you to offer a premium product at a higher price point.

If your book answers the “what”, your course delivers the “how”. That distinction is what many readers are looking for when they’re ready to take action.

Creating a Website That Works for You

At some point, you need a central place where everything connects. That’s where your website comes in.

Your website becomes the home of your brand. It’s where people can learn more about you, access your resources, and stay connected. It also plays a key role in building your email list, which is one of the most valuable assets you can have as a creator.

Here’s an example of my website: https://www.globalselfpublishing.com/

Over time, your website can attract consistent traffic through blog content, search engines, and links from your videos or social platforms. This creates a steady flow of new readers and potential customers discovering your work.

Building Income Through Affiliate Partnerships

Affiliate marketing is often overlooked by authors, but it can become a strong and reliable income stream.

If you’re already using tools and resources that help you in your process, chances are your audience could benefit from them as well. By recommending products you genuinely use and trust, you can earn a commission when someone signs up through your link.

The key here is authenticity. When your recommendations are aligned with your content and genuinely helpful, they feel natural rather than forced. Over time, these partnerships can add up to a meaningful and consistent source of income.

Using YouTube to Grow Your Audience

YouTube has been one of the most effective ways to expand my reach. It allows you to connect with people on a more personal level and build trust over time.

By creating content that answers questions, shares your experiences, and provides practical advice, you position yourself as someone worth listening to. Each video becomes an entry point into your world, leading viewers to your book, your website, or your other offerings.

One of the biggest advantages of YouTube is that your content continues working long after it’s published. A single video can bring in views, subscribers, and opportunities months or even years down the track. Visit my YouTube Channel HERE

Offering Coaching for Deeper Impact

As your audience grows, you’ll find that some people want more personalised support. They’re not just looking for information, they want guidance tailored to their specific situation.

Coaching allows you to provide that level of support. It’s a more direct and impactful way to help people, and it often becomes one of the most rewarding parts of building your business.

Even working with a small number of clients can create a strong income stream while also deepening your understanding of your audience’s needs.

Bringing It All Together

When you look at all of these elements together, you start to see how they connect. Your book introduces your ideas. Your YouTube channel builds awareness and trust. Your website captures and nurtures your audience. Your courses provide structured learning. Your community keeps people engaged long term. Your coaching offers personalised support. And your affiliate partnerships add an additional layer of income.

You don’t need to build all of this at once. In fact, it’s far more effective to start with one or two areas and expand gradually over time.

Publishing a book is an incredible milestone, but it’s only the first step in what can become a much larger journey.

When you begin to think beyond the book, you open yourself up to opportunities that go far beyond a single product. You create multiple ways to share your knowledge, connect with your audience, and build something that continues to grow over time.

Your book has already done the hard work of opening the door. What you build next is entirely up to you.
